Vanessa Haynes recreates songs from the classic album Aretha Franklin – Never Loved A Man, The Way I Love YouThis evening will form two episodes of Jazz FM’s Classic Album playback series that will broadcast on the station throughout September on Saturday/Sunday nights at 9pm.

Hosted by jazz legend Claire Martin OBE, each week the programme concentrates on a pivotal classic jazz album that has stood the test of time. Recorded in front of a discerning audience at HJC, a panel led by Ian Shaw will play tracks from the album and discuss their opinions on why the album as a collection of tracks worked to create the classic work we know of today, adding a layer of knowledge and understanding that will feed the inquisitive mind of the audience. Following the playback, Vanessa Haynes will re-create a number of tracks from the classic album, performing a mini-set, which you can hear as part of the broadcast.

Vanessa Haynes

One of the greatest voices of the modern era, Haynes cut her teeth working as a backing vocalist for Van Morrison and Chaka Khan before stepping into the spotlight to become lead singer of British funk legends, Incognito. She will be performing songs from her first two solo albums alongside a selection of her favourite soul and jazz classics.

With her deeply soulful and gospel tones, it’s easy to hear why The Guardian’s esteemed jazz critic, John Fordham, recently described Haynes as ‘a remarkable vocalist,’ whilst the Evening Standard simply called her a ‘soulful powerhouse’ We couldn’t have put it any better ourselves.
