Paul Carmichael

Paul’s musical upbringing was based around Classical Piano. However his love for Jazz and Blues swiftly propelled him into picking up the bass and performing around the world as an accomplished bass player. Playing the London circuit as well as at the famous Ronnie Scotts, his credibility as a bass player was making waves and led to a series of new opportunities and musical collaborations across the music industry.

Paul toured with Barbara Thomson’s Paraphernalia and Jon Hiseman, Dominic Miller (Sting’s guitarist) and working closely with renowned guitarist, writer and producer John Themis. An important milestone came around 1982 when Paul recorded the classic album with Allan Holdsworh IOU.

Actively working on the London Scene in both live and session work for Radio and TV, this included a regular spot on a show called ‘Playaway’ which ran for several years.

In 2014 & 2015 Paul toured with the Bob Malone Band in the UK, performing a repertoire which included a series of great Blues and New Orleans R&B. Other collaborations included playing for Artists such as; Lulu, Manu Dubango, Soft Machine and Charles Aznavour, Dory Previn, Paul has been fortunate enough to have worked in some of the biggest London Theatre Shows including; ‘Les Miserables’, ‘Joseph and The Technicolour Dreamcoat’, ‘Cats’, ‘Just So’ and ‘Moby Dick’, produced by Cameron Macintosh.

Paul also produced and co-wrote on the Debut CD for Vanessa Haynes (Incognitos singer) called “Stay With Me” Paul last solo recording was ‘Wax is Melting’, at the beginning of 2012 with a clear direction of where his music was heading, exploring ideas on instrumental improvised music. Paul calls this a World Album rather than a Jazz album, although it is both!

At Hampstead Jazz Club Paul will perform from Wax is Melting, and 3 new compositions which will be recorded later this year, as well as a title from the IOU album, in honour of the late Allan Holdsworth, and singer Paul Williams Fellow musicians on this line up include new up and coming musicians.
