Nigel Price and the Leon Greening Trio recreate songs from the classic album Wynton Kelly Trio with Wes Montgomery – Smokin’ At The Half NoteThis evening with form two episodes of Jazz FM’s Classic Album playback series that will broadcast on the station throughout September on Saturday/Sunday nights at 9pm.

Hosted by jazz legend Claire Martin OBE, each week the programme concentrates on a pivotal classic jazz album that has stood the test of time. Recorded in front of a discerning audience at HJC, a panel led by Ian Shaw will play tracks from the album and discuss their opinions on why the album as a collection of tracks worked to create the classic work we know of today, adding a layer of knowledge and understanding that will feed the inquisitive mind of the audience. Following the playback, Nigel Price and the Leon Greening Trio will re-create a number of tracks from the classic album, performing a mini-set, which you can hear as part of the broadcast.

Guitarist Nigel Price is the winner of two British Jazz Awards for best guitarist (2014 & 2016), a virtuoso soloist who has recorded with Van Morrison and JTQ as well as having five albums to his name.  The group is completed by the Leon Greening Trio.

Nigel Price:

Nigel a well established member of the jazz community has earned himself praise and acclaim as one of Britain’s finest guitarists and arguably one of the best in the world. His musical prowess and ability on the strings is not only enigmatic but leaves the audience spellbound by his speed and technical navigation taking the guitar to its limits.

The audience were swept along by the sheer musical force, as the notes seemed to pop out from his guitar like so many bullets fired from a gun. If you haven’t seen this groovy jazz gunslinger play yet then make amends immediately, he’s a legend in the making.Griff Prescott, Arundel Jazz Club – March 2009
