The Hampstead Jazz Club brings you a special evening of British jazz from father and son duo Matthew and Stan Sulzmann. Featuring London jazz stars Will Barry (piano), Will Sach (bass), and Dave Storey (drums).

The first joint outing of British saxophonists Matthew and Stan Sulzmann, this new group was formed in 2022 to celebrate the musical bond between father and son. With a focus on creativity and virtuosic improvisation, the group explores some of the pair’s favourite music spanning original compositions and selections from the tradition.

Although they have been playing together for over 10 years (more recently including in a 2018 Arts Council funded tour of Stan’s big band project  “Neon Orchestra”, followed by a remote recording project through the lockdowns), this is the first time the two have fronted a smaller group together, where their unique connection is allowed to shine. The duelling saxophones are supported by a choice rhythm section comprising award-winning pianist Will Barry, Will Sach, and Dave Storey.

Matthew Sulzmann is a London based soprano/alto saxophonist and graduate of the Royal Academy of Music. In addition to leading his own bands, he has worked with groups including Dom Ingham Sextet, London Jazz Orchestra, and Neon Orchestra, and performed across most of London’s notable jazz venues, as well as appearing in both the London and Scarborough Jazz Festivals.

A brilliant saxophonist with an instantly recognisable sound, Stan Sulzmann’s CV reads like a who’s who of jazz, including work with the likes of Michael Brecker, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Mike Gibbs, Marc Copland, the New York Composers Orchestra and Gil Evans. At the forefront of the European modern jazz movement since the late 60’s Stan commands an enormous amount of respect not only for his great playing but also for his compositional originality.
