Scottish jazz vocalist and songwriter Louise Dodds will be making her Hampstead Jazz Club debut tonight, with her quartet featuring Tom Gibbs, Calum Gourlay and Dave Hamblett. The quartet will also be showcasing some brand new material at tonight’s show!
The quartet will be performing songs from Louise’s latest album ‘The Story Needs an Ending’ alongside new material. Released in 2022, the album is a deeply personal collection of songs written by Louise, both moving and uplifting, rooted in jazz but also with songwriting at their core, and from a deeply honest place.
“an eloquent and perhaps surprisingly buoyant album with Dodds’s clear and pliant vocals escorted with considerable panache” – The Scotsman
A much loved and highly respected figure on the UK jazz scene, Scottish jazz vocalist Louise Dodds released her first album in 9 years in March this year. The album, ‘The Story Needs an Ending’, was also Louise’s first fully original album. Since it’s launch at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Louise and her quartet have been performing the songs to audiences around the country, and are delighted to be making their debut at Hampstead Jazz Club tonight.
The album features 10 original tracks, written by Louise, that are rooted in jazz but also with the art of song writing at their core. They are all written about Louise’s own life experiences, touching on subjects such as grief, female intuition, emancipation and learning to trust life again, and are both moving and uplifting.

Prior to hitting the studio, 2020 saw Louise opening for Norma Winstone MBE as part of the Edinburgh Jazz Festival’s Scottish Jazz Weekend, as well as well as collaborating for the first time, one collaboration resulting in a single being released “Whispers” (Credits) with old friend and guitarist Ant Law.
2021 saw further collaborations, recording her original material with musicians from around the globe in a series entitled Songs From the Blue Room. Guests have included Elchin Shirnov (Avishai Cohen trio), Maurizio Congiu in Paris, Gro-Marthe Dickson in Norway(AMP Records), and fellow Scots Graeme Stephen and Alan Benzie. The series was even picked up by press in Russia, Azerbaijan and France.
Louise’s last album, ‘Fly’, was released in 2013 and featured UK jazz musicians John Pearce, Dave Green, Steve Brown and Martin Shaw. That same year she performed at Pizza Express as part of the London Jazz Festival, and was also awarded funding by Jazz Services UK and Arts Council England for her UK tour. Louise also performed the Title Theme and Credits Theme for the PS4 game Mutazione in 2019.
“Our singer’s journey is cleverly outlined…well written songs with interesting hooks and a determination to live again” Bebop Spoken Here
“The 10 self penned tracks are strongly cathartic, a mood that’s served well by limpid unfussy arrangements and Dodds’s own clear, unforced vocals” – Jazzwise
