Lady Sings the Blues – A Celebration of Billie Holiday

Saturday 8th February 2020

Tickets: £15.00 Seat

Doors: 7.00pm

Show: 8.00pm-10.00pm

The Hampstead Jazz Club is excited to welcome and present this first class show, breathing life into the iconic songs of the voice that was the infallible BILLIE HOLIDAY.

Join Jordan Jackson (UK) and Ken Linh Doky (FR/DK) for their moving homage to the renowned jazz singer, Billie Holiday. With songs like ‘God bless the child’, ‘Don’t explain’, ‘Tenderly’, and ‘Just the way you look tonight,’ this will be a truly spectacular night of song and live music. Following their sold out shows at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2019, where they took the audience on a journey through the 20s and 30s, they look forward to sharing this wonderful arrangement of songs and warming hearts at HJC.

Standing under the spotlight with a Magnolia in her hair Jordan’s rich tone is the perfect fit for this repertoire. And the interplay between the two musicians is the icing which makes this show so electric. They leave the audience feeling uplifted, which with these heart wrenching songs is no easy task. After 100 years since these songs were first penned, the duo make the songs sound new.

It is after hearing a rendition of Aint Misbehavin’ in one of Copenhagen’s jazz jams that Jordan & Ken were inspired to experiment with their own arrangements of Billie Holiday songs. The duo’s interpretations of these songs are unique yet approached with sensitivity to the genre. Jordan says “As a singer, I am so inspired by the music of Billie Holiday because there is so much raw emotion in her music, which is so incredible for me to interpret. The project really forces me to dig deep and be conscious about how to emote the songs. Her stories of heartbreak for example can be related to anyone and I want people to feel that when they hear our show.”
