John Williamson Trio

Thursday 19th May 2022

Tickets: £20.00 Seat at a shared Table for 4 /£15.00 Seat – No Table

Doors: 7.30pm

Show: 8.00pm-10.00pm

Bassist John J. Williamson leads a trio with the acclaimed saxophonist and composer Alex Hitchcock, and Jay Davis, whose instantly recognisable drumming propels a number of outstanding bands, LIVE at The Hampstead Jazz Club!

John’s “detailed and hugely compelling” writing is anchored by emotional honesty and a keen melodic instinct, and ranges from neo-Tristano treatments of songbook harmony to big-sky Americana influenced by his time in the US. A selection of standards completes an intimate, expressive set that at times embraces the pared-back format and at others transcends it.

“Razor-sharp reactions to a constantly shifting musical landscape… promised much and delivered in spades.Bebop Spoken Here

In Leeds, Washington DC and now London, John’s musicality and versatility have led to a varied portfolio of work alongside a long list of renowned creative musicians. His first originals project as leader draws on this broad experience, guided by an unswerving commitment to melody, invention and communication.

The trio includes two of the most respected and distinctive voices on the UK scene, Alex Hitchcock and Jay Davis. Each is recognised as much for their unique approach as for the creative and collaborative spirit they bring to projects they are involved in.

John’s writing is influenced by the infectiously angular contrafacts of Lee Konitz and the Tristano school, the vivid programmaticism of Charles Mingus, and the fertile axis between the American songbook, folk music and free exploration embodied by Paul Motian, Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden and others. A selection of standards completes a varied yet unerringly melodic and cohesive set, which at times embraces the pared-back trio format and at others transcends it.

The project debuted last year to two packed houses at the Vortex jazz club, and has recently returned from a tour in northern England which Bebop Spoken Here said “promised much and delivered in spades… well-worth hearing.”
