Jo Harrop presents an evening with multi award winning saxophonist Tony Kofi, and brilliant young pianist Will Barry.

 An intimate evening of jazz songs, inspired by the musical romance of Billie Holiday and Lester Young, who developed a close bond, and recorded ’startlingly elegant music’ together for many years. He affectionately called her, Lady Day and in turn, she loving named him The President, or Prez. 

Featuring some beautiful songs from their recordings together, the trio will pay homage to two of Jazz’s most highly respected artists. Expect songs such as ‘Fine & Mellow’, ‘More Than You Know’, ‘This Years Kisses’, ‘Mean To Me’, ‘He’s Funny That Way’, ‘All Of Me’, and more.

JO HARROP

Jo Harrop is fast rising as the jazz songstress everyone is talking about. Jo has recently completed her successful tour as she continues to collaborate with some of the biggest name in the world of jazz today in addition to the release of 2 successful albums.

Born in Durham and raised on a heady musical diet of Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin, Jo Harrop moved to London and quickly established herself as one of the most unmistakable voices in British jazz.

Having been signed to London-based jazz label Lateralize Records, Jo released ‘Weathering The Storm‘, her debut album with guitarist, Jamie McCredie.

The second release of ‘The Heart Wants‘, received rapturous reviews from The Times to The Guardian, and has also become the choice new album for many radio stations being played extensively on BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 2 and Jazz FM and is currently riding high in the US Jazz Album Charts.

TONY KOFI

A two-time winner of the BBC Jazz Awards among others, Tony Kofi is a British Jazz multi-instrumentalist born of Ghanaian parents who plays alto, baritone, soprano, tenor Saxophone and flute. He cut his teeth in the Jazz Warriors of the early ’90s, and went on to establish himself as a musician, teacher and composer of some authority. Tony’s playing has been a feature of many bands and artists he has worked/recorded with include The World Saxophone Quartet, Donald Byrd, Eddie Henderson, The David Murray Big Band, Abdullah Ibrahim, Macy Gray, Harry Connick, Jr., Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s Coltrane Configurations and Ornette Coleman.

WILL BARRY 

Will Barry is a pianist, drummer and percussionist from London who graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2016. He is part of numerous projects internationally, most prominently touring with Phronesis bassist Jasper Høiby’s group ‘Fellow Creatures’ in Turkey, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, Holland and also extensively in the UK.  In the last few years Will has performed at the North Sea, Love Supreme, Green Hours and Umbria Jazz Festivals.

Whilst living in Spain, Will appeared alongside Mario Rossy, Madison McFerrin and Perico Sambeat as well as Cuban musicians Julio Montalvo, Yoel Paez and Issac Delgado Jr, performing in Barcelona, Alicante and Madrid and recording at Berklee College of Music in Valencia. Chucho Valdés (Irakere) described his playing as “sensitive and fluid – a beautiful sound”.

Seats are not numbered and you will be seated at available tables. Please note tables seat 4 people, so for bookings of less than 4 people, you will be seated and share a table for 4.

For £15.00 Tickets:

This is a fully seated event.  Seats are not numbered and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Please NOTE, there is NO food served in the Jazz Club, there is a bar for drinks. We advise booking a table for dinner at the Duke of Hamilton upstairs at least 1hr before show-time – Book Here

Please note the Jazz Club is situated in the basement of the Duke of Hamilton Pub and access is via a number of stairs. The nearest toilets are situated on the 1st floor of the Pub.
