Jazz FM’s Classic Album Playback series in partnership with the Hampstead Jazz Club. Alex Wilson recreates songs from the classic album Monty Alexander’s – Yard Movement Album. This evening will form two episodes of Jazz FM’s Classic Album playback series that will broadcast on the station throughout September on Saturday/Sunday nights at 9pm.

Hosted by jazz legend Claire Martin OBE, each week the programme concentrates on a pivotal classic jazz album that has stood the test of time. Recorded in front of a discerning audience at PizzaExpress Holborn, a panel led by Ian Shaw will play tracks from the album and discuss their opinions on why the album as a collection of tracks worked to create the classic work we know of today, adding a layer of knowledge and understanding that will feed the inquisitive mind of the audience. Following the playback, Alex will re-create a number of tracks from the classic album, performing a mini-set, which you can hear as part of the broadcast. 

Alex Wilson – Winner of a LUKAS Award for Jazz in Europe, Alex Wilson is a British/Swiss pianist, firmly rooted in the genres of World Music, Jazz and Latin.  Born in the UK of mixed English/African parentage and was brought up in the UK, Sierra Leone, Austria and Switzerland, Alex began his career receiving a BBC Jazz Rising Star award and went on to perform with Wynton Marsalis, Ernest Ranglin, Courtney Pine, Hugh Masakela (RIP) and was musical director/arranger for Rodrigo y Gabriela and their CUBA project.  He led a collaboration with Malian griot Madou Sidiki Diabaté and Ahmed Fofana on the award-winning Mali Latino project and has co-written books with Omar Puente and Seckou Keita.
