The ‘David Dower Trio’ is where memorable piano melodies meet distorted fuzz bass, underpinned by eclectic percussion grooves. Taking inspiration from artists such as Ben Folds and The Bad Plus, the ‘David Dower Trio’ blends pop, jazz, rock, and Bulgarian influences into an accessible and energetic experience.

Australian pianist David Dower is joined by his long-time musical brothers, British musicians Luke Fowler (bass) and Matt Fisher (drums). The Trio are embarking on their 4th tour of the UK and Bulgaria, a journey that has led to performances at major Bulgarian jazz festivals, and recording albums with Bulgarian choirs. A night not to be missed!

David Dower is an Australian pianist and composer, based in Melbourne. David’s two-year stint living in London led to the creation of the “David Dower Trio”. Starting out as a residency at “The Junction” in South London, the band quickly developed a connection, exciting energy, and a shared musical vocabulary.

Matt Fisher (drums) is a jazz drummer with a twist, blending Tony Williams energy with nuances derived from years of studying the Indian Tabla. Fisher has a knack for spotting moments inside of Dower’s compositions and making his unique mark.

Luke Fowler (bass) is a stalwart of the London jazz scene. A highly accomplished bassist, a workhorse with a bounty of experience, and plenty of technique to express himself across the bass. His utilisation of a distorted fuzz-pedal in this trio adds a rock edge that helps this music transcend genre boundaries.

These two musicians unique energy formed a perfect canvas for Dower to express the bold energy and honest melodic stylings that have come to define both his compositions and improvising, leading to an overall sound that Julian Joseph (BBC3 Radio) describes as “tasteful, textured and considered”.

A fascination with the music and culture of Bulgaria the ‘David Dower Trio’ began to tour there in 2017, and have never looked back. This 2022 tour will be their 4th trip, playing 10 shows; two in London and eight in the Balkan nation.

The Trio have recorded two albums in Bulgaria, both available online on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp. The Trio’s newest album “There Are No Stars” features Bulgarian special guests including a traditional Bulgarian choir, a Kaval player, and Bulgarian jazz vocalist Vesela Morova. This evening’s performance will include some music from this album.

David Dower has shared the stage with musicians such as Tina May, Trudy Kerr, George Garzone, Robin Banerjee, John Abercrombie, Jim Black, and Graeme Blevins. David has also supported Fred Wesley, and played at festivals including Bansko International Jazz Festival (Bulgaria), WOMAD (UK), Tamworth Music Festival (AUS), Lemon Festival (AUS), Burgas Jazz Festival (Bulgaria), and Dixie Jazz Fest (Bulgaria)
