JOIN AMUND KLEPPAN LIVE FOR HIS DEBUT AT THE HAMPSTEAD JAZZ CLUB IN, A POWERFUL NIGHT OF CONTEMPORARY MEETS TRADITIONAL JAZZ, ACCOMPANIED BY SOME OF LONDON’S UPCOMING HEADLINE MUSICIANS!

The Norwegian drummer Amund Kleppan is a young and fiery drummer who combines contemporary jazz with straight ahead in a powerful sweep of his own compositions and arrangements. Joined by the next generation of London talent – Emma Rawicz on sax, Sultan Stevenson on piano and Matt Hollick on bass, the band will play music from Kleppan’s latest album Venture in addition to a mix of brand new compositions and arrangements of standards.

Jazz drummer Amund Kleppan released his debut album Venture in 2019 to international acclaim. With strong ties to his native Norway, he also tours regularly across Europe with Amund Kleppan Quintet, Aloft Quartet and other ensembles.

Since picking up his first pair of drumsticks fifteen years ago in his neighbour’s basement, Amund has been completely hooked. Currently he is completing his Masters degree at the Royal Academy of Music where he’s studying with teachers such as Dave Holland, James Maddren and Orlando Le Fleming. Prior to his time in London he studied in Germany, obtaining his Bachelor degree from the Jazz Institute Berlin.

Amund received a Danish Music Jazz Award for “New Artist” with his group Aloft Quartet in 2018, and they have released three albums since to rave reviews. He is a proud endorser of the Japanese drum company Canopus Drums and a recipient of the 2021 Ian Fleming Instrumental Award. Throughout his career, Amund has shared the stage with many fine musicians such as Arild Andersen, Marius Neset, Trygve Seim, Jacob Young, Espen Berg, Bjørn Vidar Solli, Marcin Wasilewski, Ellen Andrea Wang, Peter Weniger, Judy Niemack and Randy Brecker.

A European union of talents is alive and very well on this album by a multi-national band, led by the young Berlin-based Norwegian drummer Kleppan. As well as being a talented drummer he writes fine compositions. Indeed, the whole album is very well programmed, with succeeding pieces contrasting with yet complementing each other. The recording is sharp and the balance reinforces the sense of a sextet of equals rather than front and back lines. Every member of the band makes valuable contributions, and Venture is a thoroughly commendable example of contemporary mainstream jazz.” – Jazz Journal UK
