Franco-American pianist Tom Sochas and his trio return to Hampstead Jazz Club, premiering new Mountain-inspired music from their latest album ‘Facing North’, composed in the arctic circle on a small island off the coast of Norway, as well as older repertoire and a few swinging standards.

The show will feature Tom on piano and electronic textures, Theo Malka-Wishart on double bass and Alasdair Pennington on drums. There will also be projections throughout. Expect a blend of delicate contrapuntal melodies, spacious Scandi soundscapes as well as harder hitting grooves. Not to be missed!

Tom Sochas is a Franco-American pianist born and raised in Paris, France and Nairobi, Kenya. Tom moved to London in 2011 to study and pursue his artistic career.

Tom’s love of lyrical and melodic music, hard hitting post-bop and his passion for western classical music has led him to developing a unique sound, itself materialising into his first solo EP, ‘You could hear the bird sing’. Following its success Tom Sochas released his debut trio album ‘The Sorcerer‘ on Khumbu Records in April 2022. Tom was awarded the ‘Do It Differently’ grant from Help Musicians UK to support the release of this record.

Tom and the trio have had the pleasure of touring this record and performing to sold-out audiences in some of Europe’s greatest jazz clubs including Ronnie Scott’s in London, Birdland in Hamburg, Sunset Sunside in Paris, Philly Joe’s in Tallinn, Sala Clamores in Madrid, The Jazz Bar in Edinburgh and Milano Jazz Club in Barcelona amongst others. Tom was recently awarded another grant by Help Musicians UK and has just released his sophomore album Facing North, out on Khumbu Records.

“A love letter to the mountains and a hope for a brighter future for both climbers and the mountains’ social and natural ecosystems. I wanted to explore the sonic possibilities that came from spending time amongst them, but also shine a light on matters that I hold dear to my heart, such as the effects of climate change on mountains and the on-going inequalities and injustices on local populations created by high altitude mountaineering in the Himalaya.”

★★★★ “Not surprisingly given the inspiring subject matter, “Facing North” feels innately cinematic, with a sweeping beauty permeating through each and every track” – UK Vibe

“A trio well worth seeing Live” – Jazzwise

“Spellbinding piano from Tom Sochas… a very, very beautiful album” –  Jamie Cullum
