Join Raphael Jost for his first concert in London at The Hampstead Jazz Club, with fellow musicians Joe Lee on bass and Luke Tomlinson on drums. Their shared love for the jazz tradition and unrestrained joy of playing unite them, captivate audiences with their energetic swing feel and lively interplay.
In his trio, Jost presents new music including original compositions that have evolved over recent months, and have just been recorded for a new album which will be released early 2025.
Swiss singer and pianist Raphael Jost defines himself as a modern crooner. He surprises with his powerful, warm voice and effortlessly bridges jazz and pop. His songs are snapshots of his life – catchy and always cleverly crafted. At the same time, Jost, who has already been awarded the Swiss Jazz Award for his debut album, loves to sing swinging standards and brings to life his idols from the swing tradition at the piano, such as Oscar Peterson, Monty Alexander and Ahmad Jamal.
Raphael Jost grew up in northeastern Switzerland. He completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the Zurich University of the Arts, majoring in jazz piano and singing as a minor subject. As the best bachelor project in 2011, his band “Raphael Jost & lots of horns” was invited to play at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Jost was honoured with the Soloist Prize of the European Young Artists’ Jazz Award in Burghausen (Germany) in 2012 and won the Swiss Jazz Award three years later.
As a teenager, Raphael would never have thought that he would someday fall in love with jazz. Elton John or Michael Jackson were the interpreters of the songs he played on the piano at that time. It was the British singer and pianist Jamie Cullum and his mix of jazz and pop that opened up a new musical world for him and aroused his enthusiasm for singing.
With his own bands, Raphael Jost has performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Jaffa International Jazz Festival Tel Aviv, Bingen Swingt Festival, the Schaffhauser Jazzfestival, Festival Da Jazz St. Moritz and many more concerts across Central Europe, Sweden and Japan.
“Raphael Jost is a phenomenon: A virtuoso pianist, highly gifted singer and on top of that, he’s a witty charmer” Kulturtipp
“He knows how to write songs – jazzy yet still radio-friendly” – SRF2 (Swiss national radio)
“Raphael Jost is that rarest of birds: A singer/songwriter with a great voice and great songs, who’s also an instrumentalist capable of sharing the stage with the best. Jost is the complete package” – Will Vinson (British saxophone player)
