Monkin’ Around – A Tribute to the Genius of Thelonious Monk
A dynamic trio of seasoned jazz musicians—Dave O’Higgins, Luke Fowler, and Billy Pod, pay tribute to one of jazz’s true originals: Thelonious Monk. Oscar Wilde once wrote, “Imitation is the highest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” While there’s nothing mediocre about this group, they wholeheartedly embrace the idea of honouring Monk’s legacy with both reverence and originality. Monkin’ Around is a collaboration between three friends, united by a deep love for Monk’s music and a shared desire to explore and reinterpret his singular compositions. With decades of combined experience, each musician brings their own voice and sensibility to the stage, using Monk’s work as a launchpad for vibrant improvisation and creative expression.
“The music is beautifully captured and the playing is crisp and lively. The quintet take on ‘Two Timer’ and ‘Brake’s Sake’ the former with a lovely theme played out with piano, trumpet and tenor in unison and the latter bringing the Blue Note sound of the fifties to mind” – Jazzviews.net
