HJC Presents Bassist Simon Woolf as he switches to cello a la Pettiford in this unusual group. The cello is tuned in 4ths an octave above the bass and is a solo instrument. Lockrane and Woolf, who are both gigging pianists, alternate in accompanying one another from the piano bench. Rhythm accompaniment from two of the leading lights on the young straight-ahead scene.

Simon Woolf

Simon Woolf is a lyrical double-bassist in the tradition of his great idol, Red Mitchell. He has enjoyed long associations with leading UK jazz artists Andy Panayi, Mark Nightingale, Geoff Simkins, Dave Cliff, Peter Jacobsen, Bobby Wellins and been heard accompanying such US jazz greats as Benny Golson, Harry Allen, Grant Stewart, John Colianni, Ruby Braff, George van Eps & Howard Alden. He was featured alongside leading players from all over the world at the “Bass 2012” convention in Copenhagen.

Known for his lyrical solos he has in recent years toured with such leading American soloists as Harry Allen, Howard Alden, Chris Cheek and Grant Stewart. These days you are just as likely to find him seated at the keyboard from where he leads a quartet featuring Andy Panayi in programmes built around the work of the big five songwriters.

Gareth Lockrane

Gareth Lockrane is the UK’s premier jazz flautist, a prolific and versatile musician who makes regular sideman appearances as well as leading his own bands and musical projects. He has also established himself as one of the finest jazz flautists in Europe, with a string of high profile appearances alongside the likes of Quincy Jones, Marti Pellow, Corrine Bailey Rae, Laurence Cottle’s Big band and many more to mention.

Lorenzo Morabito

Lorenzo Morabito is an Italian double bass player based in London and has quickly become a first-call bass player on the British jazz scene since the pandemic. Lorenzo is a key member of the Nat Steele Quartet, where he performs alongside vibraphonist Nat Steele, pianist Matyas Gayer, and drummer Steve Brown. His talent and dedication to jazz have earned him a reputation as one of the most promising young bassists in the contemporary jazz scene.

Joe Dessauer

Joe Dessauer is a London based jazz drummer, who has been a regular fixture on the London jazz scene since 2016. After studying jazz performance at Middlesex University under the tutelage of Dave Ohm and Josh Morrison, Joe has gone on to work with Howard Alden, Anita Wardell, Dave O’Higgins, and many others. He is a specialist in swinging mid century jazz music, and can be found playing at some of London’s top jazz venues, including Ronnie Scott’s, The 606 club, and Pizza Express Jazz Club.
