Join Karl Charity for an evening sharing the beauty of Chet Baker’s songs and instrumentals in the perfect, intimate setting that is Hampstead Jazz Club.

Once called the James Dean of the 50’s American Jazz scene, Chet’s life lurched from crisis to crisis in both his personal and professional lives after succumbing to what became a life-long  problem of drug addiction.

Regardless of the troubles that beset Chet, his music was always from the heart, and he loved what he considered his only skill, making music.  His unique playing and singing style is still much loved throughout the world, even though his last recording was in January 1988 just months before his death on 13 May 1988.

KARL CHARITY

Karl came to the world of jazz, inspired by the songs and music of Chet Baker, Mark Murphy, Diane Schuur, Nat King Cole and Miles Davis. Starting out as an instrumentalist he soon found a new and growing audience as a jazz singer and has now amassed an impressive collection of Jazz standards including all the favourite hits from the Great American Songbook featuring all of the great composers including Gershwin, Cole Porter, Sondheim and Kurt Weill. He also produces several shows with his trio: Liam Dunachie (piano), Misha Mullov Abbado (bass) and Scott Chapman (drums). These shows include tributes to Chet Baker and Nat King Cole. “Music From the Shows” showcases hits from 42nd Street, Guys and Dolls, Wild Party, West Side Story and more.

Karl has recorded his own album “Calling Card” produced by Liane Carroll and mixed by Derek Nash at Clowns Pocket Recording Studios…..“The whole process was inspiring and fun. On the day, the trio played the album tracks with such passion! I loved every minute.”  He is also planning a new recording which will include several new and exciting original songs.

In recent years, Karl has shared the stage with some of the country’s greatest jazz performers: Liane Carroll, Ian Shaw, Tina May, Derek Nash to name a few!

I have had the pleasure of working with Karl over many years and without exception, the man delivers a true, complete performance and makes the musicians want to rise to his instinctive level.” – Liane Carroll

Such a lovely time had by all last night at Ronnie Scott’s with the brilliant Karl Charity and the boys. Top Jazz musicianship on offer. Loved it. Thank you so much!” – Christopher Hare

Tonight Karl and his trio will be recreating the music of trumpeter and singer, Chet Baker.
