HJC is proud to introduce Cloudy Peaks, a captivating London based jazz quartet led by Italian pianist Lorenzo Bellini. His music has been described as “powerful, imaginative, innovative, courageous, dynamic yet poetic, romantic, lyrical and super genuine” (Tiger Okoshi) and as “vital energy, essential, pure, bright and deeply serious” (Garda Jazz festival).
CLOUDY PEAKS
Cloudy Peaks is a band led by pianist Lorenzo Bellini, including alto saxophonist Kasper Rietkerk, double bassist Guy Dempsey and drummer Luke McCarthy. Interpreting compositionally the most recent instances of modern jazz, their name refers to the imaginary mountains that the London sky hides behind its ever-present curtain of clouds, giving those who can picture them a feeling of sublime, positive weakness. “Cloudy Peaks” wants to embrace the human need of discovery that comes from the imagination of something grand and unknown, away from their usual urban horizons.
The band features a diverse group of musicians. London based, Dutch alto rising star saxophonist Kasper Rietkerk, contributes a vibrant, expressive sound that seamlessly blends with the band’s collective energy. The group is rounded out by Guy Dempsey and drummer Luke McCarthy, among the brightest young talents in the London jazz scene. The international makeup of Cloudy Peaks is integral to its sound, as each member’s background influences their approach to music. Drawing on their diverse musical traditions, the band’s interpretation of contemporary jazz is a testament to the fluidity and global nature of the genre, where influence flows freely across borders and cultures.
The name “Cloudy Peaks” reflects the band’s collective vision—a metaphorical journey through sound that evokes the hidden mountain ranges veiled by London’s ever-present cloud cover. These peaks symbolize the unknown and the sublime, representing the sense of awe that arises from imagining something grand and elusive beyond the everyday urban landscape. Just as the city’s sky obscures these peaks, Cloudy Peaks invites listeners to venture into the realm of imagination, where the boundaries of reality blur, and new possibilities emerge.
At its core, the band seeks to embody the universal human desire for discovery—both external and internal. Their music embraces this sense of exploration, offering a musical space where each member’s unique background intertwines to create something new and unexpected. Cloudy Peaks is about pushing beyond the familiar, diving into the unknown, and expressing emotions that transcend cultural and geographical borders. Through their sound, they create a shared experience of wonder and vulnerability, inviting listeners to embark on a journey of discovery, introspection, and connection.
